Paul immediately begins his letter to the churches of Galatia by making a statement of authority saying that he has not been sent by people, but by Jesus Christ himself. Rom 14:17, “For the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.”, 1 Thes 1:6, “You also became imitators of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much tribulation with the joy of the Holy Spirit.”, Beyreuther also notes: “It is no accident that the words appear particularly where there is express mention of the eschatological fulfillment in Christ, of being in Him, and of hope in Him.” Therefore, joy is the way believers view the present in light of God’s plan for the future.” (Complete Biblical Library Greek-English Dictionary). (Galatians 5:22-23) Show answer 1. PERIPATEO, περιπατεω in Gal 5:16, literally means “to walk or to walk around,” that is, to put one foot in front of the other to affect forward motion. We lose our experiential sanctification and instead live with sin inside of Satan’s cosmic system. “Corruptible or Perishable Seed” in 1 Peter 1:23 refers to the transmission of the Old Sin Nature from the male in copulation. But when we operate under the filling of God the Holy Spirit, “walking by means of the Spirit,” we have the necessary power, coupled with the Bible Doctrine in our souls, to disregard the temptations to sin from our Sin Natures and Satan’s cosmic system, and instead are freed up to impersonally and unconditionally serve one another through AGAPE love. Once you commit a sin, the Sin Nature controls your soul and is a stronger power than it was when merely residing in your body. The Old Sin Nature cannot succeed apart from one’s consent. The believer sins after salvation in two categories. As Oswald Chambers notes, “Our Lord’s making of a disciple is supernatural. Tolerance is the Greek word ANECHO, ανεχω that means, “to hold up, bear with, endure, be patient with, give patient attention to.” Tolerance is, “the capacity for or practice of allowing or respecting the nature, beliefs or behavior of others.” In other words, you are not prejudice, impatient, or self-righteous in terms of your thoughts and relationship with other people. Therefore, the Old Sin Nature works through the soul. Rather, he said all of God’s commandments could be summed up by simply loving each other instead of putting each other down. 2 Peter 1:6. I summarised the Bible on Twitter between Aug 2010 and Nov 2013 - one tweet per chapter, one chapter per day. In spiritual walking, you are using Divine energy, i.e., the omnipotence of God. The Old Sin Nature was created in man’s body, becoming the ruler of his body. As we turn to Chapter 5, we will begin by completing the list of 17 Points on “Why the believer is not under the Law,” by Dr. Charles L. Feinberg. the filling of the Spirit producing Divine Good through you, “there is no law.” When you are filled with the Spirit, you are on a higher plain, a higher law. Therefore, “joy” is inner mental happiness from the power of God’s Word and Spirit resident within your soul, Rom 14:17; 1 Thes 1:6. Therefore, these nine manifestations of our transformation to Christ’s nature are created supernaturally within us by God the Holy Spirit. In spiritual walking, we shift from using our own human power to using Divine power. In this list we see something of a progression in our spiritual walk, as Christ is not formed in you over night, but over many years of consistently taking in and applying Bible Doctrine. Until comparatively recent times, biblical scholars assumed that this epistle was sent to the churches in the geographical region known as Galatia, in north central Asia Minor. Watch our overview video on the book of Galatians, which breaks down the literary design of the book and its flow of thought. The Book of Galatians reminds the Church to embrace and follow the gospel message of the crucified Messiah. The multifarious manifestations of arrogance include jealousy, bitterness, hatred, vindictiveness, implacability, self-pity, self-righteous arrogance, motivational and functional revenge, slander, maligning, gossip, and judging. Therefore, the Old Sin Nature is Satan’s inside agent recruiting for the cosmic system. Perhaps the finest and most concise summary of the message of this epistle is found in verse 1 of chapter 5. Galatians chapter 5. Eph 5:8, “For you were formerly in darkness (spiritual death), but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light.”. “Flesh” here is the Greek noun SARX, as elsewhere in the New Test., that means your human nature’s ability to produce sin. As believers we’re all born of the Holy Spirit of God to be free. He never felt guilty because of what He did or worried about the consequences or what might happen as a result of sin. This is what we call the Doctrine of Ultimate Sanctification. 2 Thes1:11. The second manifestation of AGAPE love is: Peace, which is EIRENE, ειρηνη that means, “Peace, harmony, tranquility, or good health.” It is similar to SHALOM of the Hebrew. There are three types of good in history. God does not say, “Be spiritual,” but He says, “Walk before Me …,” Gen 17:1. Even though the Judaizers were the minions, Satan was and is the mastermind behind all false doctrines including legalistic religion that is designed to occupy the believer’s or unbeliever’s way of thinking so that they do not come to the point of “faith-resting” in Christ. All the Law is fulfilled by the Holy Spirit. It includes the idea of forbearance and patient endurance of wrong under ill-treatment, without anger or thought of revenge. We are to be experientially sanctified daily which means walking in righteousness under the plan of God and filling of the Holy Spirit. And if we have sinned, we can utilize the grace of God in 1 John 1:9, by confessing our sins to restore our fellowship with God that includes the filling and leading ministries of God the Holy Spirit. This is noted in the next phrase, when Paul states, “and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery,” which is the Present, Passive Imperative of ENECHO, ενεχω, that means, “have a grudge against, be hostile towards; and in the Passive voice be subject to.” This tells us that even though we stand positionally free, experientially we can return to the bondage of sin and Satan’s cosmic system. 17For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. Walking in newness of life means we walk in the light of the Word of God. As our example, God shows us kindness representing His grace applied toward man, Eph 2:7ff; Titus 3:3-4. We call this “Experiential Sanctification.”, We also receive freedom in Phase 3, when the Lord takes us home to eternal glory and gives us our resurrection bodies, because we are removed from sin and evil for all of eternity. They have been set free; now the question is, “How will they use their liberty?” iii. They have cut themselves off from entrance into heaven and the Royal Family of God because they never believed in the all sufficient work of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice for their salvation. Law and grace are mutually exclusive principles; therefore, choose one or the other. By virtue of being in union with Christ, this was done for us at the moment we believed. We can love our neighbors as ourselves not out of fear of the Law, but out of the freedom and love that the Cross of Jesus Christ has afforded us to be able to do. In Gal 5:22-23 there are nine characteristics mentioned. In literal walking, you are putting one foot in front of the other and shifting weight from the back foot to the front foot. In context, here it means that theses Judaizers will be cut off from the family of God and from having a relationship with God because they never came to salvation through faith alone in Christ alone. This involves application of the Word, prayer, worship, praise, and fellowship with God’s people. our experiential sanctification. Our experiential freedom can be regained by the grace of God when we apply 1 John 1:9, the confession of our sins, and receive fellowship with God, a.k.a., the filling of the Holy Spirit, once again. The Fruit of the Spirit is what we call “Divine Good Production.” It means the righteous actions that you produce while under the enabling power of God the Holy Spirit. “One day the chickens will come home to roost,” as the saying goes, that is explained in the last verse. Likewise, if you do sin, utilize the grace of God through confession of your sins, 1 John 1:9, to regain fellowship with God and the filling of the Holy Spirit. The Old Sin Nature resides in the cell structure of the body and is the source of all inner temptation. Instead he recognizes that he too is a sinner and relies upon the grace of God in faith. Paul says, “it was for freedom,” (in all three phases of the Christian life), “that Christ has set us free”. He never had to look over His shoulder due to His sins. It does not mean simply to put a cork on your temper; it means much more than that. It means “keep in step with the Spirit,” do not run ahead and do not lag behind, but be in lock step with Him. Why? Here we note the list of virtues in Gal 5:22-23 called “fruit”, KARPOS, καρπος in the singular, indicating the crop of nine qualities produced by the Spirit in those who walk in dependence on Him, Gal 5:16. 7 Aug 2013. In addition, “walking in the truth,” John 14:6 tells us that we must have the application of Bible Doctrine from our souls. When we do, we enter back into a life that we have been freed from; a life of sin, fear, worry, anxiety, etc., that binds us and holds us down. Galatians Chapter 5. STOICHEO, στοιχεω in Gal 5:25; 6:16 means, “to march in step, to march in rank, to walk in agreement with, to function in a system, to follow a leader from the ranks.” It is used in the N.T. All of this is represented when God commands us to “not turn our freedom into an opportunity for the flesh.”, Gal 5:14, “For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” ”, Then in the second half of vs. 13 and continuing into vs. 14, we are commanded to, “through love serve one another…which fulfills the whole Law.”. Rom 6:4; Eph 5:2. Galatians 5:1-15 New International Version (NIV) Freedom in Christ. Gentleness/Meekness means to think, to understand before God that you are not worth anything and neither is anyone else; that we are all here by the grace of God. Mechanically, Divine Good is produced by the “Balance of Residency” between the filling of the Holy Spirit and Bible doctrine applied from the soul, Heb 13:10. ... Chapter 3: Chapter 4: Chapter 5: Chapter 6: Book Overview - Galatians . Mat 5:5; Titus 3:2; 1 Peter 3:4. The word “fruit” is singular, which serves to show that all of the elements of character spoken of are a unity, making for a well-rounded and complete Christian life. Previous | Index | Next >> "THE EPISTLE TO THE GALATIANS" Chapter Five OBJECTIVES IN STUDYING THIS CHAPTER 1) To see that liberty in Christ does not mean license to do whatever we want 2) To understand how one might be separated from Christ, and fall from grace 3) To appreciate the need to walk in the Spirit, and the true evidence of one led by the Spirit SUMMARY With verse one, Paul … We too are children of God (light), and therefore, are to walk as Christ walked, with impersonal and unconditional AGAPE Love. Here it is not the peace with God which we have in justification, but the peace of God in our hearts that is defined as tranquility of mind based on the consciousness of a right relation to God, Col 3:15; Phil 4:7. The volition guards the gate of the soul from the Old Sin Nature’s temptations. Eph 2:10, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”, Col 1:9-12, “For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience; joyously 12giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in Light.”. So, next time you are debating how liberally to apply your Christian freedom, reorient your mindset, Rom 12:1, and instead ask how liberally you can apply your freedom in the service and love of others, not yourself. All Rights Reserved. Living the Faith-Rest Life, vs. 5-6. Gal 5:13, “For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.”. Galatians Summary by Jay Smith. As Romans 7 tells us we have died to our sin nature. He said that even though believers have freedom in Christ, they should not use it as an excuse to please themselves. Live in your freedom from the bondage of your sin nature, sin and Satan’s cosmic system, which Jesus won for you at the Cross. Being tempted by the Sin Nature is not sin; only when volition pulls the pin of the grenade does the believer sin. The Persecution Factor, vs. 11-12. Read Scripture . But many time refers to our Adamic nature that tempts us to sin. He was consistently filled with the Holy Spirit as He applied God’s Word. (1) A summary statement: in light of all that Paul has previously said, he now challenges the Galatians to walk in the truth he has presented. Eph 5:15-18 and 3 John 4, are mandates to keep walking in the Spiritual life, that means keep being filled with the Holy Spirit and keep learning Bible doctrine to keep advancing spiritually in the Christian way of life. Reject False Doctrines, vs.10. Therefore, no one ever sins apart from his own consent or the function of this own volition. He knew more than thirty languages. As Paul put it earlier in the chapter, they have been made free by Jesus Christ, now they are called to stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free (Galatians 5:1). When they find them in our lives, they know that we have something they lack. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. The first one he mentioned was his journey to Jerusalem with Barnabas and Titus. being experientially sanctified. Because of these two factors, 1 John 1:9 says that we are to confess our sins so that we are “forgiven of our sins,” (sins of cognizance) and “cleansed from all unrighteousness,” (sins of ignorance). The reflexive Middle voice says that the Judaizers are doing this to themselves by maintaining their self-righteous, legalistic view towards salvation. The believer’s proneness to sin calls for his dealing with grace, not dealing according to the Law. Retroactive Positional Truth, means that prior to your salvation you were bound / married to your sin nature / “the flesh,” Rom 7:1-2. Grace Fellowship Church 23 Messenger St., Unit 3 Plainville, MA 02762. And just as Adam had responsibility to utilize his freedom wisely and righteously, we too have the responsibility to use our freedom in Christ wisely and righteously. As a result, you bring maximum glorification to God and will receive rewards and blessings for both time and eternity. These verses continue the exhortation of Paul to the Galatians, not to make their liberty from the Law a base of operations from which to serve the flesh, but rather to live their Christian lives motivated by Divine love. The third category is directed God-ward, that have an expression towards man as we have fellowship with God: faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Flesh, Liberty vs. Bondage A. Paul Corrects Peter. Eph 2:6, “And raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”. As Paul said in vs. 1, “for freedom Christ has set us free.” That means we were freed from the constricting and controlling nature that is sin and our Sin Nature. He knew more than thirty languages. In the sense of spirit it is feelings or disposition. Patience means you are longsuffering with others, giving them grace in all situations. God does not ask us to do the things that are naturally easy for us—He only asks us to do the things that we are perfectly fit to do through His grace, and that is where the cross we must bear will always come.” (My Utmost for His Highest.) Freedom never means the right to do as you please; freedom is the power to do as we should. Rom 7:14; 1 Cor 3:1‑3. That then takes us to the topic of “how do we operate in freedom to serve through love?” The answer is found in vs. 16, 22-23; walking by the Spirit. Remember that the context of the second half of Galatians Chapter 5 is the 7th Characteristic of “Christ Formed in You,” which is AGAPE Love. Paul emulated his life after the life of Christ. As this verse tells us, we were set free from our sin nature and Satan’s cosmic system so that we would function consistently in the AGAPE Love of God. In literal walking, you are using physical energy. The second category is directed outward or neighbor-ward, towards man, directed toward other members of the human race: patience, kindness and goodness. In the list of sins mentioned in these passages, we see that our personal sins not only negatively affect our own lives, but also the lives of those around us, as vs. 15 says, “take care that you are not consumed by one another.” Therefore, if we are operating in sin, under the control of our Old Sin Natures, on a consistent basis, we are negatively affecting one another / our neighbors, and are not heeding this command to serve one another through love. 1 John 1:10, “If we say that we have not sinned (after salvation), we make Him a liar and His Word (doctrine) is not in us.”. We were set free so that freely we could pour ourselves out to God and others. It was not used in classical Greek and first appears in the Septuagint. Therefore, believers crucified that evil nature with its passions and lusts, in the sense that when we put our faith in the Lord Jesus as Savior, we received the actual benefits of our identification with Him and His death on the Cross. We can do this by the power of God's Spirit with us. Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. The first is an exhortation to the believer to remain strong in the faith they have and not be sidetracked by legalism. (16-26) The last part of that phrase, “that Christ has set us free,” means that Jesus Christ is the power and agent of our freedom. It is related to a condition of peace, a respite during an endless series of wars. Paul started Galatians Chapter 2 by discussing his journey to Jerusalem and what he experienced on during that time. Paul’s warning here is applicable to both sides of the argument. Likewise, a new trend occurred toward human good and evil, producing the satanic policy. We call this “Positional Sanctification.”, Secondly, it means freedom to live everyday without the bondage and hindrances of sin and the Law. 1 So Christ has truly set us free. We all have this Sin Nature in our bodies, yet our soul is not occupied by the Old Sin Nature. The term “flesh” is used to represent that the OSN is a part of the cell structure of our bodies. Just as the Jews had to remove any leaven (yeast) from their homes in preparation for the Passover, so too must the unbeliever avoid legalism or any systems of works for salvation, if he is going to be saved. “Sin” is the singular of the Greek word HAMARTIA that generally refers to the Old Sin Nature, Rom 5:12, 7:14; 1 Cor 15:56; 1 John 1:8. The Spirit of the Flesh (13-15) And to walk in the Spirit, and not to fulfil the lusts of the flesh: the works of both are described. It is service through AGAPE Love, not self-indulgence, which fulfills our Christian freedom. Likewise, because the sin nature is related to the biological life, it is called the flesh. Therefore, we have been liberated to love. It is steadfastness and patience toward others. With this right kind of balance in your soul regarding yourself and others, you are then able to “show tolerance for others.”. To have tolerance you must first have humility within your soul, then gentleness and great patience. Please click the link below to download: Copyright © 2001 - 2018. (1) Politically it was the Roman province which included Lycaonia, Isauria, and parts of Phrygia and Pisidia. Rom 12:19, “Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.”. That’s the difference. We will note the first six characteristics in verses 1-12. 3 Again I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law. John expands upon this experiential walking by stating we need to “walk in the light,” which is an image of Christian faith, 1 John 1:6f; 2:6ff. Philo, a Jewish philosopher in Egypt during the time of Christ, used this word to signify restraint in relation to bodily desires, especially sex, food, or idle chatter. The pin of the grenade is related to some form of arrogance. The first category is directed self-ward or inward. Whether sins of cognizance or sins of ignorance, the volition of the soul is involved in every sin. Summary of Galatians 1. 2 Cor 5:21, “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”, Now with newness of life, as a new spiritual species we are qualified to walk by means of God the Holy Spirit for our experiential sanctification, as we have noted previously in the outline of “walking.”. 20“But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”. As a result, each manifestation in this list is a form of AGAPE Love in action. The new life has been extended into the Church Age, where “walking” has become an analogy for the execution of the Plan of God. In Galatians, we see the reason for God’s adoption of us as adult sons and giving us the freedom that was won at the Cross of Jesus Christ, that is, “to serve one another through AGAPE love by means of the filling of God the Holy Spirit.”. Mark my words! Col 3:15, “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful.”, Phil 4:7, “And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”. All who advocate the Law for the believer cannot keep it themselves, and their intention is ultimate glory in the flesh. He said they went to Jerusalem because some people had sneaked in and told people things that were contrary to Paul’s message of freedom in Christ. And that is what sin does to man, it limits his abilities, while constantly constricting and controlling his every thought and action. It is equivalent to life inside of Satan’s cosmic system and can result in the various stages of reversionism. 1 comment. Our Lord walked in the prototype of God’s Power System (GPS); we are to walk in the operational type GPS. Jesus ran the entire course of His life according the plan and will of God the Father. It means being patient and lenient toward others even when self-vindication may seem justified. Grace Fellowship Church Galatians 6. This term emphasizes the origin of the Old Sin Nature: Adam’s original sin which is perpetuated through the twenty-three male chromosomes which fertilize the female ovum in copulation. He lived unto God inside the plan the Father had established for Him; all the way to the Cross, burial, resurrection and ascension. In vs. 2-4, we are told that if we go back to the Law, or any form of legalistic / self-righteous worship, Christ will be of no benefit to us. It is based on walking by means of the filling of God the Holy Spirit. Finally, when we receive our ultimate freedom in Ultimate Sanctification, there will be no Old Sin Nature in the resurrection body of believers, Phil 3:21. While those who feel more freedom to do as the world does, usually do so out of selfish indulgence. Reject all False Doctrines to protect your soul. That is why Paul gives the command to “not turn our freedom into an opportunity for the Old Sin Nature to lead us into sin.”. 2 Listen! Read this chapter in full. Like CHRESTOTES the word “goodness” is an overt activity of grace toward someone else that stems from the mental attitude of grace. To view some of our archived videos, you will need to download Adobe Flash Player. When you are tolerant towards others you are free to love as you should. I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no value to you at all. Here's a Bible study quiz from Galatians chapters 5 and 6. The book of Galatians is a Pauline Epistle (letter from Paul). Goodness means to do something which comes from the motivation of grace, and only from the motivation of grace, with special reference to generosity. It is not a license to sin and please ourselves as we would, but rather the freedom of an unhindered life that is no longer bound to sin and Satan’s cosmic system. 2 Cor 5:7, “For we walk by faith and not by sight.” The Faith-Rest Drill is the poise of the Christian life. Keep running the spiritual race and finish the course. But here Paul says, “Keep on standing firm” in your freedom. Their own judgments will come upon their own head and God will deal with them in due time, Deut 32:35; Rom 12:19; Heb 10:30. USA. This “walking” is only made possible for the Church Age believer by first having faith in the Person and work of Jesus Christ, (“the Light of the world”). It is a quality that should pervade and penetrate the whole nature. The fourth manifestation of AGAPE love is: Kindness / Gentleness, which is from CHRESTOTES, χρηστοτης which refers to “goodness, uprightness, kindness, mercy, or generosity.” Gentleness is the mental attitude of grace which expresses itself in kindness toward others. We were set free so that freely we could pour ourselves out for others, God and man. Galatians 5:4 “You who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.” Galatians 5:22-23 “ But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. (13-15) And to walk in the Spirit, and not to fulfil the lusts of the flesh: the works of both are described. “Have crucifying the flesh” is the Aorist, Active Indicative of the verb STAUROO with the Noun SARX. And as we have noted in this chapter, if you are to have “Christ Formed in You,” then you must: And as 1 Cor 13:13 tells us, “But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.”, Gal 5:14, “For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”. is the backward-looking work of Christ on the Cross where He paid the price for every sin. Notice in these verses that to abide in Christ to have Divine good production also requires operating in AGAPE Love. Rather they help you to learn the message of the scripture. Against such things there is no law.” Remember that you do not try to crucify your flesh, (sin nature), because first it would be nothing more than a human work which is evil in God’s eyes, and secondly because the fact is you cannot do it anyway. Never worry about getting revenge on those that persecute you, or those who lead others into false doctrine. “Walk in newness of life,” Rom 6:4, this means to function in the new spiritual life you have been given, to live as the new spiritual species that we are, 2 Cor 5:17; Gal 6:15. Fruit grows only in an environment blessed with an abundance of the Spirit and the Word. They use their Christian freedom as an excuse to push the boundaries of right and wrong; they use it as a license or justification to sin. . Col 1:9‑10, “For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.”.
